CANADIAN NATIONAL RECORDS FALL IN EARLY FEBRUARY 2022

Gariela Debues-Stafford on R with Julie-Anne Staelhi complete fast 3000m in New York

Both Gabriela Debues-Stafford of Toronto and Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn, Nova Scotia set Canadian record performances in New York last weekend.

Gabriela who trains in Portland, Oregon with the Bowerman Track Club produced a blistering kick in the 3000m on the 200m banked track in Staten Island as she defeated Mekides Abeba of Ethiopia. The University of Toronto graduate exploded past the African, running the final 100m in approximately 13.8 seconds, winning with a 2.3 second margin over the Olympic finalist in the 3000m steeplechase. Gabriela already holds the Canadian records in the 1500m, mile and 5000m both indoors and outdoors. Her time in New York was 8:33.92 breaking Jessica O'Connell of Calgary previous record of 8:46.50. Julie-Anne Staehli of Lucknow, ON ran a personal best in the same race also breaking the past record with her 4th place time of 8:43.55

Sarah Mitton moved up in the world scene with a remarkable shot put of 19.16m at the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge at the Amory Track in New York. Her throw with the 4kg shot ranks 3rd in the world this year and breaks Brittany Crew's previous record of 18.89m. While Sarah continues to be coached by Richard Parkinson of the SISU Club in Toronto, her former training partner, Brittany Crew has moved to Kamloops to work with Olympic medalist, Dylan Armstrong. Sarah Mitton will be training in California until mid March. Once selected by Athletics Canada, she will compete in the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

2021 Tokyo Olympian, Madeleine Kelly of Pembrooke, ON ran an amazing double in Boston last weekend with winning both the 800m in 2:02.81 and the 1000m in 2:40.05 to lead all Canadian marks this indoor season. To qualify for the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade set for mid March this year, the University of Toronto graduate would need to run 2:01.50. Canadian women who this season have met the qualification standards for Serbia include, Khamica Bingham in the 60m plus Gabriela and Julie-Anne in the 3000m. Lauren Gale of Ottawa, now at Colorado State University exceded the standard of 52.90 in the 400m with her 51.55 but at altitude. This unknown plus the NCAA indoor Championships obligation puts her in a grey zone for the moment.

On the men's side, qualification for the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade next month have been achieved by Bolade Ajomale in the 60m, Edrick Floreal Jr in the 400m and John Gay in the 3000m as their seasonal bests in the chart below exceed the standards set by World Athletics. Cameraon Proceviat's mark of 7:47.03 may be invalid as the University of Washington indoor track exceeds the standard 200m distance required for valid marks.
