Athletics Canada is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of lifelong athletics supporter Kim Young.

A BC-based teacher, Young began his coaching career with the Richmond Kajaks in 1965 and soon afterwards founded the BC elementary track and field school championships in 1968. From there, he went on to become Team Canada Coach at the 1979 and 1982 Pan Pacific Games.

Young coached beginners and Olympians alike, his roster of athletes including Tinker Robinson, Donna Barker, Heather Donaldson, Lori Ewing, Marjorie Bailey, Anne Mackie-Morelli, and Albin Dukowski. He was inducted into the B.C. Hall of Fame as a coach in 2008.

A leader in every sense, Young served as Director of Athletics Canada, President of BC Athletics, and Chair of the longest continuous international meet in Canada: the Harry Jerome Classic.

"Kim Young has made a lifelong endeavour to improve the opportunities for Canadian youth through his devotion to his calling in education as a teacher, administrator and coach, said colleague, 1952 Olympian and fellow BC Hall of Famer Doug Clement. "The track and field movement in Canada has lost an individual whose  lifelong contribution cannot be matched."

Our thoughts are with Kim's family and close ones during this difficult time
