ACHILLES INTERNATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD SOCIETY ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT BETWEEN CANADA’S 2023 HARRY JEROME TRACK CLASSIC and POLAND’S MITYNG LEKKOATHLETCZNY ZDZISLAW KRZYSZKOWIAK

Dr Ken Poskitt, President of Achilles International Track and Field Society (AITFS) and Nigel Hole, Meet Director of the 2023 Harry Jerome Track Classic (HJITC) announced today an agreement between international track and field competitions in Poland and Canada.

MAREK JEDRZEJEK

Past president of AITFS, Marek Jedrzejek, long time coach at the University of British Columbia and Canada’s Olympic and international teams has negotiated this historic agreement with meet director of Mitring Lekkoaletyczny Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak, Marek Diwyk.  Jedrzejek is opening the door to exchange of athletes between these Polish and Canadian competitions  in the near future by partnering this “Sister City Athletic Competitions Agreement”.

MAREK DIWYK

This agreement was facilitated as Marek Jedrzejek coached Marek Diwyk prior to his immigration from Poland to Canada 40 years ago. Both share a passion for Athletics, the name for track and field in most of the world except the US and Canada.

Both Poland and Canada are very close competitive nations in World Athletics competitions. The populations of both countries are very similar: Poland 37,747,000 Canada 38,246,000. Results from World Athletics Championships show Poland and Canada won 4 medals each in 2022 in Eugene, Oregon each achieving top 10 ranking in the world at 8th and 9th position

Each meet name honours past world record holders and Olympic medalists, Harry Jerome of Canada and Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak of Poland.

Jerome set a total of seven world records, initially tying the 100m record at 10.0 seconds in 1960.  He won the Olympic bronze medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the gold medal in the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston and 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg.

Krzyszkowiak ran his first world record clocking 8:31.4 in the 3000 m steeplechase two months before the 1960 Rome Olympics. At the Olympics itself, Krzyszkowiak won the gold medal in the 3000 m steeplechase. He won the gold medals in both the 5000m and 10,000m in the 1958 European Championships.

2023 Harry Jerome Track Classic will be held on July 14th at McLeod Stadium in Langley, BC while the Mitring Lekkoaletyczny Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiakis set for Walcz, Poland on August 10th.
