29 CANADIAN TRACK AND FIELD RECORDS FALL IN PAST YEAR

RECORD BREAKERS: MO AHMED AND GABRIELA DEBUES-STAFFORD

Athletics Canada announced this week that the 2022 indoor season has been a busy one for Canadian record ratification, with more Canadian records falling last weekend.

Gabriela DeBues-Stafford set a new North American indoor 5,000-metre record at the BU Valentine Invite, just days after establishing a new Canadian record in the 3,000 metres. Her new 5K area record is now 14:31.38 – 16 seconds faster than the previous mark and 26 seconds faster than her previous indoor best.

Mohammed Ahmed made a little history of his own at the meet, breaking his own Canadian record in the indoor 5,000 metres, setting the standard in a sizzling time of 12:56.87 and shaving eight seconds off the previous record.

Kyra Constantine is the proud new owner of the women’s indoor 300-metre record, clocking in with a time of 36.94 seconds at the American Track League Eastern Indoors, taking 0.14 seconds off the previous mark and becoming the first Canadian woman to go sub-37 seconds.

Lauren Gale took down the long-standing indoor 200-metre record at the Don Kirby Invitational, finishing with a time of 23.08 seconds.

Aurora Rynda set a new indoor Canadian 600-metre record at the Windy City Invite with a blazing time of 1:27.05 to break the 38-year-old mark.

Chloe Thomas set a new Canadian U20 record in the mile in Boston, running a seven-second personal best in the mile of 4:40.74 to earn her spot at the top of the Canadian record books.

When these are added to the Canadian records broken in the past year, we have an avalanche of activity by Canadian track and field athletes of all ages.  14 Outdoor Canadian performances plus 15 indoor marks total 29 new Canadian records in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic induced challenges to training locations and rare competitive opportunities before no spectators. Our Olympic Track and Field team performed beyond any expectations to finish 5th in the world. A truly banner year!
