Track and field athletes from around the globe will contest the World Indoor Championhips in just over 2 weeks in Belgrade, Serbia on March 18-20. This vision is clouded by the advancing reality of war in the Ukraine and the hopefully receding threat of the Covid-19 pandemic. These are challenging times to keep a clear vision of the immediate  future. Athletics Canada is expected to announce their plans for team selection very soon. Some athletes are expected to focus solely on the outdoor season which features the World Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon in mid July. Many Canadian athletes at US Universities will end their winter season with the NCAA Indoor Championships scheduled in Birmingham, Alabama on March 11th and 12th. This makes one expect a compact number of Canadians to compete in Belgrade.

Canada's top 30 performance this winter reflect the rising standards as both women's and men's list require a World Athletics score of over 1100 points. This supports Canada's record at the Tokyo Olympic Games of ranking 5th in the world, may continue at the 2022 World Championhips in Eugene.

Lauren Gale of Ottawa and student at Colorado State University continues her outstanding indoor campaign with 3 more Canadian record performance with her 23.00 over 200m and her 51.78 for 400m. She will clearly focus on gaining a podium performance at the NCAA indoor as will Aurora Rynda in the 800m. The Toronto native now a senior at the University of Michigan set the Canadian record of 1:26.50 over the 600m. Lindsay Butterworth of North Vancouver got a personal best and World indoor qualification mark with her 800m win in Boston of 2:01.45. Micha Powell of Toronto achieved the qualification mark in the 400m with her 52.68 in the 400m.

Camerson Proceviat of Vancouver startled the track community with his remarkable time and new Canadian record of 3:52.54 in the mile in Boston last weekend. The SFU graduate is now a medical student at the University of British Columbia. He has made remarkable gains over the past 2 seasons and the future is indeed bright.
