A retired journalist, Gary started his reporting career with the Canadian Press, which included a 16-month stint at the B.C. legislature, before moving to the Vancouver Sun in 1989 as a sports reporter. He covered the CFL, NBA, junior hockey, lacrosse, auto racing, track and field, soccer and Olympic and Paralympic sport. Gary was at every Paralympic Games from Athens 2004 to Sochi 2014 and covered the Calgary 1988, Turin 2006, Beijing 2008 and Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Olympics. Gary is a member of the North Delta Lions service club and referees high school football.

1960 Olympic Games in Rome, competed in the 100-metre race and set a Canadian record 4 x 100-metre relay team.
He was a sport administrator and professor of exercise science at Sir George Williams and then Concordia from 1973-2004. Short's participation on the 1969 Lancer Football team got him inducted into the University of Windsor's 23rd Annual Hall of Fame.
