Indoor season has come to a close for 2018 with 4 women’s national indoor records established during the winter.
Alysha Newman of London, ON jumped 4.70m in the pole vault in Birmingham, UK in her final competition at the World Championships. She had established the Canadian indoor record of 4.66m on Fayetteville, AR on February 10th, but with mark she leapt to the top of the Canadian list.
Kate Van Buskirk and Gabriela Stafford ran personal bests at the World Championships with 4:09.42 and 4:09.94 respectively in their heats. Kate ran her Canadian mile record of 4:26.92 on 27 January in New York and then ran a startling 3000m in 8:49.02 just off Megan Metcalfe Wright's Canadian record of 8:48.56 set in Valencia, Spain in 2011. Unfortunately Kate was not selected to the Canadian group going to the Commonwealth Games, April 4-15 in the Gold Coast, Australia.
Strangely this early date will be a very serious test of fitness for relatively small team making the trip. Hopefully there will be some possibility of preliminary starts prior the Games themselves.
