It may have been April Fool’s Day on April 1st but Canadian men were not “Foolin’ Around”. Our best Canadian men came out of a long winter of training to start their 2017 drive on the Road to London with some good early outdoor season marks.
Aaron Browne and Gavin Smellie came one, two at the Florida Relays 200m in 20.53 and 20.58 with a friendly 1.6m/sec following wind. Aaron joined teammates, Andre De Grasse, Brendon Rodney and Akeem Haynes the next day to win the 4x100m in 38.15. Later that same day, Gavin stepped into the 4x200m replacing Akeem Haynes, to win again in 1:19.91.
Brandon McBride won the 1500m in 3:44.66 in Gainesville, FL
Mike Tate ran a startling person best of 13:39.81 in the 5000m in Palo Alto, CA. Shawn Barber opened with 5.50m at the Texas Relays pole vault to take the silver medal position.
Django Lovett jumped 2.16m in the high jump at the UBC Open in Vancouver.
