Jessica Smith’s specialty is the 800 metres. Her extra-special specialty is the Harry Jerome Track Classic 800 at Swangard Stadium.
The North Vancouver native and Simon Fraser University product’s personal best at the distance remains the one minute, 59.86 seconds she clocked in winning the Jerome on the Burnaby track in 2012. As well, that performance gave her the Olympic standard necessary to help her to qualify for the London 2012 Games.
Smith also won the Jerome last year at Swangard in 2:01.40, and that time qualified her for the Pan Am Games in Toronto last summer.
This year’s Jerome goes Friday at Swangard, and organizer Doug Clement is calling it the best Jerome ever, thanks to a vast array of Olympic and world-championship competitors slated to be on hand. Added to that is that Clement thinks enough of the women’s 800 m this time that he’s making it the showcase event, ending off the night with it.
