The Achilles Track and Field Society announced today that Andre De Grasse will compete at the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic on Friday, June 17th at Swangard Stadium. The 21 year old Canadian sprint sensation from Markham, ON was named by CBC, the Canadian Athlete of the Year in 2015 after double gold medals in the 100m and 200m at the Pan American Games in Toronto and a bronze medal in the 100m at the World Championships in Beijing.
De Grasse moved his training base from the University of Southern California after signing an historic $11.25 million (US) professional contract with PUMA, to the Altis group in Phoenix, AZ with Canadian coach, Stuart MacMillian.
Andre De Grasse appearance in the 33rd year of the Jerome Classic is historic in more than one way. The very first meet that the Achilles Society organized in 1964 featured North Vancouver’s Harry Jerome just prior to his winning the Olympic bronze medal in the 100m in Tokyo. In 1983 a year after Harry’s untimely death, the Achilles Society honoured his life by initiating the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic. In 1997, Canada’s Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in the 100m, Donovan Bailey set the Jerome Classic meet record in 9.99 seconds.
Could a new meet record in the 100m be established by Andre De Grasse on the Road to Rio on Friday, June 17th? Could the Canadian record of 9.84 be threatened? This event will be an important qualifying event for Canadian and international athletes preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Last year over 30 Olympians from 13 countries competed at the 2015 Jerome Classic.
Andre De Grasse will join Vancouver’s Liz Gleadle who has confirmed her participation at the Jerome Classic. This UBC graduate who won the Pan American Games gold medal last season in the javelin and is ranked 5th in the world. She competes in the Doha, Qatar Diamond League this Friday, May 6th. This will be live streamed by CBC.
