Calgary’s Jenna Westaway, who won gold in the women’s 600m on the CIS track and field championships this spring in 1:29.61, has declared her entry into Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic 800m. She will face an extremely strong field lead by Canadian record holder and World Championship silver medalist, Melissa Bishop and American, Brenda Martinez who was the 2013 bronze medalist in the World Championships.
Jenna Westaway
Jenna ran well in Los Angeles last weekend with 2:02.10 clocking while Brenda Martinez of Big Bear, CA recorded 2:00.18. Valley Royals, Jessica Smith covered the 2 laps in 2:03.26. Jenna is seeking the Olympic standard of 2:01.50 and that is a real possibility with the strong competition in the Jerome Classic.
The Jerome Classic will also feature Andre De Grasse of Markham, ON who may be on the threshold of an Olympic medal, which would follow in the footsteps BC sprinters, Percy Williams and Harry Jerome.
Ben Thorne and Inaki Gomez
Canada took the silver medal at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome, Italy two weeks ago. This team lead by Ben Thorne, Inaki Gomez and Evan Dunfee will attempt to break the current Canadian best over 5000m of 18 minutes 45.64 seconds at the Jerome Track Classic.
