Canada’s Melissa Bishop, the 2015 World Championship silver medalist in the 800m, ran a personal best in the 1500m last week end on her home turf at the University of Windsor with a 4:09:38.
American, Brenda Martinez, the 2013 World Championship bronze medalist in the 800m, ran a seasonal best of 2:00.18 in Los Angeles. Both of these athletes will collide at the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic on June 17th at Swangard stadium in their specialty, the 2 lap 800m.
Brenda Martinez runs for the Big Bear TC situated in the mountains of southern California where she trains with the legendary coach, Joe Vigil who plans her program, which is overseen by her husband, Carlos Handler. Her best time in the 800m is 1:57.91
Melissa Bishop holds the Canadian record of 1:57.52 set in the semi finals of the 2015 World Championships in Beijing where she gained the podium with her silver medal in the final. She had won the Pan American Games Gold medal in Toronto in July 2015, under the guidance of her coach Dennis Fairall from the University of Windsor.
Jessica Smith of the Valley Royals and an SFU graduate who represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games, will defend her Jerome Classic 800m title as she toes the startling line at Swangard Stadium along side of her team mate Helen Crofts of West Vancouver. Annie Leblanc of Montreal, Rachel Aubry of Guelph and Jenna Westaway of Calgary will make this a featured race.
Andre De Grasse, the fastest man in Canada will make his first appearance at the Jerome Track Classic and face Kemar Hyman of the Cayman Islands who has a best time of 9.95 in the 100m.
Canada took the silver medal at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome, Italy two weeks ago. This team lead by Ben Thorne, Inaki Gomez and Evan Dunfee will attempt to break the current Canadian best over 5000m of 18 minutes 45.64 seconds at the Jerome Track Classic.
