Liz Gleadle won the javelin event at the Kawasaki Seiko Golden Grand Prix one week ago in Japan on her last throw with seasonal best of 62.59m. She edged Yuki Ebihara of Japan by 40 centimeters. Liz will use the 33rd Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic as an important step in her preparations for the Rio Olympic Games in August.
As the 5th ranked javelin thrower in the world and the 2015 Pan American Champion, Liz is a role model for Canada’s young athletes. She will be joined at the Jerome Classic by two young British Columbian throwers, who have just spent their freshman years at US universities. Brittni Wolcyzk improved her personal best his past weekend by throwing 52.15m for Nebraska at the Big 10 Championships. Teagan Rasche who throws for Virginia Tech has best of 49.96m. Both of these 19 year olds from Port Coquitlam are excited to be throwing at the Jerome Classic. Tom Nielsen of the Langley Mustang Track and Field Club has coached them.
Veteran throwers Krista Woodward of New Westminster and Melissa Fraser of Hillsburgh, ON will join them at the Jerome Classic.
Krista has held the Canadian record in the past and was Canadian Champion in 2013 when she represented at the World Championships in Moscow. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in aquaculture and currently works in the genetics lab for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in West Vancouver. Her personal best is 60.15m.
Melissa, a graduate of DePaul University in Chicago now throws for the Langley Mustangs and represented Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. Her best mark is 54.87m set in 2015.
The Jerome Classic will also feature Andre De Grasse of Markham, ON who may be on the threshold of an Olympic medal, which would follow in the footsteps BC sprinters, Percy Williams and Harry Jerome.
Canada took the silver medal at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome, Italy two weeks ago. This team lead by Ben Thorne, Inaki Gomez and Evan Dunfee will attempt to break the current Canadian record over 5000m of 18 minutes 45.64 seconds at the Jerome Track Classic on Friday, June 17th at 6pm..
