The Team Canada spots in the pole vault are currently held by Kelsie Ahbe at 4.40m and Alysha Newman at 4.31m. Leanna Carriere and Heather Hamilton will try to move into those spots at the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic on June 8 at Swangard Stadium. Leanna has a best of 4.27m and Heather has a personal best of 4.40m. There is a distinct possibility that these women could displace the current leaders. Kelsie, second in the NCAA last year, can find no way to get her poles here from Knoxville, TN and Alysha is competing in the NCAA this weekend. So the measuring tape is going to be the decider of who gets these spot on Team Canada at the Pan American Games this July.
Carriere is from Edmonton and has a flare for creating drama. Her wedding last summer was held on the track, emphasizing to her husband that he marrying the sport as well. Leanna is a decathlete and heptathlete as well but the pole vault is her passion. Listen to her interview on Global TV here.
Heather Hamilton, a former gymnast is from Mississauga, ON but now trains in the Vancouver area. She holds the NTL pole vault record at 4.40m.
