Raquel Tjernagel shocked the track and field world today as she took second place in the 400m at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, CA.
Geisa Coutinho of Brazil, a 2 time Olympian and South American Champion was the winner in 51.57 with New Westminster Secondary student second in 52.26 seconds.
Raquel represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon last summer as a 16 year old. Her best times last year were 100m-11.76, 200m-23.76 and 400m-54.77. Her run in California improved her personal best in the 400m by 2.25 seconds. This is the fastest time in the world this season for a U20 athlete and the fastest high school time in North America. No athlete of any age has run faster in Canada so far this season.
She will face a rival at the BC High School Championships in the sprint events.Zion Corrales-Nelson of St Thomas More represented Canada at the World Youth Games in Nanjing, China. Zion has not started her 2015 season to date.
