RICHMOND—The Province Harry Jerome Gran Forza V, presented by TELUS, enjoyed a record-cracking good afternoon Saturday at the Richmond Oval.
The unique indoor high school meet established five individual records as 44 teams and 220 athletes from throughout B.C. competed in the five-event Pentathlon tournament.
Those events were the 50-metres, 800-metres, shot put, standing long jump and 4x200 metre relay, contested in two divisions-- boys and girls Juvenile and Senior competitions.
Lord Tweedsmuir athletes led the record breaking day with two meet marks. Ansa Odoom, a last minute substitute, won the Senior women’s standing long jump at 2.55 metres, breaking the old mark of 2.52 while teammate Julia Vulcano won the Juvenile women`s shot put with a final throw of 11.08 metres to erase the old mark of 9.99 metres.
Vancouver College`s Anastasse Eliopoulos set a new mark in the Senior men`s 50 metres, hitting the finish line in 6.12 seconds, erasing the old mark of 6.17 seconds. Another Senior mens mark fell in the 800 metres when Pitt Marauders Reid Muller sped to victory in 1:57.43 to break the 2013 record of 1:58.16
The final record came in the Juvenile mens standing long jump from Leon Yang of Lord Byng who propelled himself 2.82 metres to break the record of 2.76 metres.
The awards for outstanding performances went to Odoom, Vulcano, Yang and Eliopoulos.
Crowned Team champions, based on the relay and individual events were: Senior Boys, Lord Byng (3257); Senior Girls, Reynolds (3745); Juvenile Boys, Walnut Grove (2600); Juvenile Women, Maple Ridge (3391).
Doug Clement, chair of Achilles International Track Society, organizers of the meet, said the concept of the meet adds extra exposure of the sport to greater high school track and field programs and may help to discover our next Olympic athletes for Canada.
Next up for the Achilles group, the Harry Jerome International Classic, June 8 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
