Michael Aono is a sure bet to be chosen to Team Canada at the World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia set for July 15th to 19th. His coach, Mary Chewning of the Vancouver Thunderbirds Track Club agrees that racing tomorrow in the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic will be sound preparation for this BC High School 200m and 400m champion as he gears up for his first U18 world championships.
This grade 11 student at Seaquam Secondary in Delta has had a break out year in 2015. He has run 10.79 in the 100m, 21.38 in the 200m and 46.96 in the 400m. He ranks #9 in the world U18 lists. Clearly he will need to drop his 400m best if his goal is to make the finals in South America. The opportunity will be there on Monday night when he faces a tough field of international senior athletes. The field is lead by Olympic 400m champion, Jeremy Wariner of the US plus is teammate Brycen Spratling and the best Canadian 400m runners.
Almost 400 athletes including 28 Olympians from 17 countries will compete at Swangard on Monday night. Tickets are $10 general admission and $25 finish line.
