Young Runners Delight In Jerome Meet Rrelay Events
The future? It looks fast, and enthusiastic.
The 24th annual Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic celebrated the future Friday night as more than 120 youngsters represented their elementary schools in what was the culmination of Seeking Harry, Seeking Valerie - The ActNow BC Jerome Talent Search.
The program, administered and organized for meet organizer Achilles Track and Field Society by Besnik Mece, former Albanian track and field head coach, resulted in elementary school teams qualifying for relay races on the June 8 Jerome meet program. While the program was all about encouraging fun and fitness through sports such as track and field, the experience of racing on a school relay team may well have piqued athletic dreams or goals in more than one participant.
In 1959, 18-year-old Harry Jerome and his 15-year-old sister, Valerie, dominated the sprint events at the Canadian track and field championships, with Harry winning the 100 and 200 metres and Valerie winning the 60 metres, 100 metres and the long jump. These exceptional athletes from North Vancouver went on to represent Canada in Olympic, Pan-American and Commonwealth Games competition in addition to serving as remarkable role models and mentors for young Canadians.
Perhaps the next Harry and next Valerie were among the energetic elementary school relay participants in Friday night's Jerome International Track Classic.
