"Statman" Davis Eager To Return To Swangard
Scott Davis delights in details.
That trait comes with his job as math instructor at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. But details - facts and figures - have been an integral part of Davis' life and invaluable to the sport of track and field in the 50 years since he first began compiling track and field statistics for his high school team.
Davis, a respected track and field statistician and one of the sport's premier public address announcers in North America, is bringing his considerable knowledge and enthusiasm to the microphone at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium on June 8 as announcer for the 23rd annual Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic.
"The key to the whole thing is preparation," says Davis of trying to monitor simultaneous events that go on at a meet. "If you're not prepared, you're in the soup.
Davis estimates he has announced at more than 400 meets in the United States while also enjoying many international assignments, including the 1999 world track and field championships in Spain and the 2005 world youth championships in Marrakech. Since 1978 he has published the comprehensive U.S. Track and Field Annual and he also serves as meet director of the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays.
Davis announced at the 2005 Jerome meet, which featured the historic inaugural Pacific World Cup dual meet of the People's Republic of China vs. Canada. He is eager to return to Swangard Stadium and witness this year's expanded international dual meet.
"I had a great time up there last year, everybody up there was just delightful and it was a good meet," he says. " I think it has the earmark, the potential, to be a great meet and I'd like to be involved, it's a great experience. The Chinese have a very strong team - whatever they have to offer, except the hurdler (Olympic gold medallist Liu Xiang) is coming. Canada is going to have to throw up what they've got. It will be very exciting."
The 2006 Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome International Track Classic, featuring the Pacific World Cup, is part of the PacifiCanada Track and Field Series. Other meets in the series: Abbotsford (June 4), Richmond (June 6) and Victoria (June 11).
