Paul Swangard, who handles the public address for Oregon’s home meets at Hayward Field, has a growing reputation as one of the top track & field announcers in the country.

It’s developed into a nice sideline for Swangard, who has a day job as managing director for the UO Warsaw Sports Marketing Center.

He announced the U.S. Open two weeks ago in Madison Square Garden, and is bound for Fayetteville, Ark. this weekend for the USA Track & Field Classic.

I caught up yesterday with Swangard, whose sports marketing background gives his opinions some weight. He had generally favorable things to say about the inaugural U.S. Open.

“It went pretty well I think,” he said. “There are still challenges to generating interest and awareness for the sport in a market where you have to yell pretty loud. It also means it’s expensive to market and promote there.”

The U.S. Open filled a void created when the iconic Millrose Games opted to move from Madison Square Garden to The Armory over the USATF’s objections.

Reviews for the U.S. Open were mixed, but Swangard said he believes this year’s meet was a good beginning.

“The fields were pretty good and the races pretty strong,” he said. “Next year is the 100th year of track and field in the Garden. We’ll be coming off an Olympic year. I hope there can be some creativity in how the meet is staged.

“I think the tension that obviously exists between the USATF and Millrose needs to get worked out.”

Swangard’s announcing schedule will be busy. In addition to handling the mic at Hayward Field during the UO outdoor season, he is on tap to help with the USA Indoor Championships in two weeks in Albuquerque, the Prefontaine Classic on June 2 at Hayward, the  Adidas Grand Prix on June 9 in New York, and the U.S. Olympic Trials, June 22-July 1 at Hayward.

The Second Annual Vancouver Province Gran Forza V presented by TELUS is set for the Richmond Olympic Oval on Saturday, March 10^th.  Last year almost 50 high school team competed in the inaugural indoor team pentathlon.

TELUS has announced an increase in bursary awards from $5000 to $10,000. This year the first three team in each of the four divisions ( Boys and Girls: Juvenile and Senior ) will be awarded by TELUS $1250, $750 and $500 bursaries.

Asianna Covington of Kajaks moved to the number two mark in the world youth lists with her 13.88m throw in the 3kg shot put. Her meet record mark was matched by Ruky Abdulai of Valley Royals in the open division with her throw of 11.08m with the 4kg shot put.

Ruky also set a new mark in the 60m hurdles with her time of 8.81 seconds.

60m sprint marks where set by Maggie Hanlon of Pacific Athletics in the open division with her 7.65 seconds and by Tia Isabelle Baker of the Vikes in the youth division with her 8.19 seconds.  Lexie Scott of Vikes set the new youth 60m hurdles mark with a time of 9.56 seconds.

Devan Weibe

800m marks fell in both the open and youth categories to Devan Weibe of UBC and Alison Williams of Ocean Athletics with times of 2:20.09 and 2:28.40 respectively.  UBC teammate, Maria Bernard broke the 1500m meet open record with her win of 4:44.27.

Pacific Athletics

The 4x400m relay marks fell in both the open and youth races with Pacific Athletics time of 3:56.44 and Ocean Athletics time of 4:15.35.

Keefer Joyce

Keefer Joyce of Kelowna edged Nathan Vadeboncouer in the open 60m sprint by 0.12 seconds with his 6.95 seconds, which is the number two mark in the Canadian Junior lists behind Wesley Best of Ontario’s time of 6.87 seconds.  Jacob Powie of Trinity Western University time of 9.00 seconds in the open 60m hurdles is a new meet record.  Sebastian Adugalski set two youth meet records in the 60m sprint and hurdles with his times of 7.45 and 8.60 seconds.

Vikes

Vikes youth middle distance runners, Liam Kennell and Thomas Getty set meet records in the 800m and 1500m marks of 2:03.38 and 4:15.93 respectively.  They combined with the winner of the 400m, Brendon Restall to set a new record in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:38.43.  Brendon’s 400m time of 50.73 ranks number two on the Canadian Junior list behind Stewart Ellenwood of SFU’s 49.75

What is the Gran Forza V ?

• There are four divisions:         Juvenile Girls, Juvenile Boys     (grades 8 & 9)      Senior Girls, Senior Boys      (grades 10-12)

• In each division, school teams of 4 or 5 athletes will compete in multi-dimensional events that will test strength, speed and endurance and will score points based on international scoring tables.
• The individual events consist of the 50 metres, 800 metres, standing long jump and shot put.
• The group event is a 4 x 200 metre relay.
• Each team may enter only one athlete in each individual event
• Each team member can enter a maximum of one individual event plus the relay.
• The points after each individual competition will be determined and the running total for all teams will be calculated.  This total after the first four events will determine the seeding for the final event, the 4 x 200 metre relay.
• The 800 metre events will be seeded sections related to best 2011 outdoor 800 metre performances.

Awards:

•       Medals to first, second and third place teams based on total aggregate points scored in the five events.

•       Trophies to the first place team in each division.

•       Harry Jerome Timex Watches to the outstanding performer in each division

•       TELUS® Track & Field Bursary in the amounts of $1250, $7500, and $500 respectively to the first three teams in each of the 4 divisions for total of $10,000

Important Notes:

• All team members must wear their school colours during their competition.

• If spikes are worn, only the following spike will be allowed for use on the new Pulastic flooring.  Omni-Lite 5mm Ceramic Indoor Pyramid spike (colour:  Olympic Green) and Omni-Lite 7mm Ceramic Indoor Pyramid spike (colour:  Olympic Gold).  The use of any other type or longer length of spike is prohibited and will be strictly enforced.  The approved spikes have been ordered in quantity by the Oval and will be available for purchase at the entrance kiosk for $6.00 for a bag of 14.  Cash payment preferred.  For any further information regarding spike regulations or availability before date of meet, you may contact Heidi Lyons at the Richmond Oval at hlyons@richmondoval.ca or phone (778) 296-1400.

• The Track Zone starting blocks will be the only ones utilized.
• Throwing implements are provided. Personal implements will not be accepted.
• Juvenile Boys will throw the 4kg (8lb 13oz) shot put and the Senior Boys will throw the 5.43kg (12lb) shot put.  Both Juvenile and Senior Girls will throw the 4kg shot put.
• The 4 x 200m relay requires four laps of the track.  The event has a 2-curve staggered start with the break-in line coming immediately after the second curve.  Baton exchanges are similar in manner to the 4 x 400m relay.
• The marshalling area is located on the long straightaway along the north-side window wall of the complex.

Athlete Registration & Spectators:

• Coach, athlete, and spectator access to the Track Zone starts at 8:30 am.
• Coaches may pick up their teams competition bibs and pay entry fees at the School Teams Check-in table in the entrance lobby to the Oval.  Coaches receive complimentary admission to the meet.  Athletes must display their competition bib in order to gain free access to the track zone.
• We recommend that coaches arrange a specific time for their team members to meet them at the entrance to facilitate the distribution of bibs.
• General Admission tickets:  $5.00.   Children under 13 accompanied by an adult are free.

Check-in Times:

• Check-in for all events will be located outside the north east corner of the running track and must occur no later than 20 minutes before the posted start times. Athletes must report ready to run. The athlete control clerk will direct competitors to the start of their event when it is time.
• Athletes will be accepted in the marshalling area no sooner than 30 minutes before the posted start time for their event.  Coaches are requested to ensure that all their athletes follow these time parameters.

Parking:

• Covered pay parking ($1.00 per hour) is available at the facility.  With large groups at special events (like ours) parking becomes quite limited and meet organizers have arranged for overflow free parking at the WorkSafe BC (WCB) complex just one block south with entrance on Elmbridge Way just west of intersection with Hollybridge Way.

BC Athletics Membership Requirements:

• All participants in all age groups in The 2012 Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Indoor Track Classic must be 2012 Competitive Athlete Members of BC Athletics or another Provincial/Territorial or foreign Athletics Assoc; or
• Elementary through Secondary School athletes competing for their school and who are not BC Athletics Competitive Athlete members can take out a $3.00 School Day of Event Membership per athlete which is in addition to the entry fee or:
• Elementary thru High Schools that have a 2011/2012 BC Athletics School Club or School District Club Membership who are not required to pay the School Day of Event Membership.

Amonn Nelson of Calgary surprised many with her 200m victory in the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games in Saskatoon as she ran 24.44 easing away from Shelise  Williams of the United States  and Carol Rodriguez of Puerto Rico by almost 4/10th of a second.  Justyn Warner of Toronto was edged by 1/100th as Cordero Gray of the United States ran 5.76 seconds.
