Atlantic Coast sprinters win at California Relays
Canadian Maritime sprinters made their mark in Sacramento California Relays on Saturday night as Adrienne Power and Jared Connaughton dominated their 100m and 200m events. Jared from PEI, a veteran of Canada’s 4x100m relays in the Beijing Olympics and Berlin World Championships, won the 100m and took second in the 200m behind Walter Spearman of the US. His time of 20.65 seconds is his second best time this season just behind his 20.61 set in Osaka earlier in May.
Adrienne Power of Halifax won her specialty, the 200m in 23.79 seconds, her best of the 2010 campaign. She also recorded a win in the 100m with 11.96 into a strong head wind of 2.3 m/sec. This Dalhousie graduate has personal bests of 11.36 and 22.79 plus a 51.85 for 400m. Could she be a candidate for Canada’s 4x400m team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi?
UBC men and SFU women take 3rd in NAIA team battle!
UBC men, SFU women bring home track and field medals

The best-ever finish for the UBC Thunderbirds men’s team, and the dominance of the Simon Fraser Clan’s middle-distance women’s duo highlighted the local flavour at the NAIA national track and field championships which wrapped up a three-day run Saturday in Marion, Ind.
Fuelled by three gold medals, including Reid Gustavson’s triumph in the decathlon, the UBC men finished third overall, improving on last season’s eighth-place finish.
The UBC men, in fact, led the standings over the first two days of the competition. On Friday, Gustavson’s decathlon win was ably supported by a pair of additional golds by Inaki Gomez in the 5,000-metre racewalk and Curtis Moss in the javelin.
On Saturday, UBC’s best finish on the men’s side was a fourth in the 1,500 metres (3:49.96) by freshman Luc Bruchet.
The SFU men were led by the thirdplace finish in the 3,000-metre steeplechase (9:06.66) by Ryan Brockerville. The Clan’s 4×100 metre relay team of Jeff Thompson, Adam Newton, Andrew Boss and Tyson Unruh set a new school record (40.96) en route to a fifth-place finish.
The Clan’s middle-distance stars were outstanding in leading SFU to a third-place women’s finish.
Teammates Helen Crofts and Jessica Smith pushed each other all season, and on Saturday proved they were the NAIA’s best.
Crofts won the 800 metres (2:07.49) with Smith in second (2:08.13), and Smith won the 1,500-metres (4:27.27) with Crofts in second (4:28.25).
Including their stint with SFU’s winning 4×800-metre relay team Friday, the duo combined to score 46 of the team’s 56 points.
“I can’t even believe what they accomplished this weekend,” said SFU head coach Brit Townsend of her terrific two. “I pulled them aside and I told them how proud I am of each of them for accepting this challenge. They each ran six races this weekend, and they never complained once.”
UBC freshman Nelly Amenyogbe won silver in the marathon (3:05.31) Saturday.

Canadians shine at NAIA Championships
Reid Gustavson of UBC won the NAIA decathlon today with a come from behind, clutch performance in the last event of this grueling 2 day epic challenge of 10 events capturing runs, hurdles, jumps and throws. He set five personal bests, 4 on the first day and one to start day 2 but the next event, the discus was frankly a disaster. He threw 30.64m well off his best of over 50 m. Bryant Sentam of Oregon Tech challenged his lead over the next 2 events so that starting the 1500m he trailed his rival by 45 points. This metric mile is the bane of all decathletes, as strength and power are needed for all other events but not this endurance test. Reid defeated his rival by over 12 seconds to eek out a 33 point victory with his 7026 points. UBC team Ivan Staeheli took 5th with 6709 points
To match Reid’s victory, fellow British Columbian, Natasha Miller from Abbotsford captured the NAIA multi-event title, as she took gold in the heptathlon with her personal best of 5310 points. She is a student at Biola University in LaMirada, California. Adelle Johns of UBC took 7th with 4632 points.

From Left,Evan Dunfee, Inaki Gomez & Creighton Connolly represented Canada at World Challenge Race Walk in Mexico.
Inaki Gomez of UBC repeated his 2009 NAIA championship victory as he took the 5000m race walk in 20:30.35, as his team mates, Evan Dunfee and Creighton Connolly were given the red card for disqualification.
Nicola Evangelista of UBC captured the 5000m race walk NAIA Championships in 25:11.56 to match team mate Inaki Gomez’s victory. That means BC athletes won both men’s and women’s gold medals in the javelin, combined events and the race walks
Liz Gleadle and Curtis Moss, both of UBC, started the trend of matching victories yesterday as both won the NAIA javelin titles. Liz made it 4 titles in 4 years, as she set the NAIA record with her toss of 56.02m.
The Simon Fraser quartet of Brianna Kane, Ali Hudson, Michaela Kane and Jessica Smith took the 4x800m relay victory over 30 other teams with a tactical 8:55.08.
Curtis Moss wins NAIA Title!
Curtis Moss matched team mate Liz Gleadle, as the UBC student captured the NAIA championships title as he launched his javelin 73.13m.
This toss moves into his 4th best ever throw behind his personal best of 78.32m set in Copenhagen just after he took the silver medal in the
Francophone Games in Beruit last summer. Could he be be selection for a spot on the Commonwealth Games team for Delhi this fall?

Gleadle Takes NAIA 4th time with record!
Gleadle takes NAIA title
by Howard Tsumura
One of the most dominant track and field careers in UBC history got its golden finish Thursday.
Liz Gleadle, the Canadian senior women’s record holder in the javelin, did as expected on the opening day of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics track and field championships, winning her signature event in record-breaking fashion.
Gleadle’s toss of 56.09 metres at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind., broke her own NAIA championship meet record of 54.31 metres from one season ago. So dominant has The Province’s former Head of the Class honoree been, she’s won the javelin at the national meet for each of her four years at UBC.
“The conditions were pretty good today but it was windy,” said Gleadle.
“It’s really hot, which is the way I like it, but the wind was tough. My first throw felt really good but the wind took it down and it ended up being my shortest one of the day. I wanted to go after my Canadian record but it wasn’t to be.”
The Kitsilano Secondary grad set the Canadian record in the javelin last summer at the FISU World University Games with a throw of 58.21 metres.
Her best throw this season was 57.84 metres, an effort she uncorked en route to victory at the NCAA Div. 1 Texas Relays. Gleadle also threw 57.10 last month in the UBC-SFU Achilles Cup dual meet.
The NAIA track and field championships run through Saturday.

Priscilla wins in Ostrava and National Record for Sultana
Sultana Frizell set a new Canadian Record in the hammer in Frankisch-Crumbach, Germany on May 23 with her 72.74m to claim 9th in the world rankings for this event. She broke her own record of 72.07m set in Eugene, Oregon last year while she took 3rd spot behind Germany’s Betty Heidler, 75.30m and Kathrin Klaas, 72.76m

Peredita Felicien has the 6th best of the season with 12.80 (-0.1) in Daegu, Korea on May 19th just behind Virgina Powell-Crawford, 12.77 and Lolo Jones,12.78 of the US

Julie gets personal best in shot
TUCSON - Julie LaBonte set new personal bests as the University of Arizona track and field team wrapped up its last home meet of the season Saturday, May 22nd at the Tucson Elite Throwers Classic. Last weekend she won the Pac Ten shot put title, an outstanding accomplishment
Julie beat her record by a centimeter and there is no better time to be throwing strongly than at this point of the season. Labonte’s mark of 16.83m increases her third best mark in UA history and was good for second place against some truly elite throwers at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. LaBonte will be one of 31 athletes heading to Austin, Texas next week for the West Preliminary of the NCAA Championships.
Julie is a frosh at University of Arizona after graduating from Ste-Justine High School, Ste-Justine, Quebec. One of the top athletes on the Canadian junior scene in the past couple decades, LaBonte set the Canadian Junior record in the shot put event with a mark of 16.09m. The previous record had been held since 1964. She competed at the 2009 Junior Pan-American Games in Trinidad and Tobago where she finished second. She won the shot put and discus events at the Canadian Junior Nationals and represented Canada on the Junior National team. LaBonte was the gold medalist at the Commonwealth Youth Games. Julie was the winner of the Eric E. Coy Memorial Trophy for junior thrower of the Year in 2008.
Taylor Milne runs 3:40.71
Taylor Milne has done it again. The 28 year old Olympian from Callander, Ontario solidified his position as Canada’s leader in the 1500 as he ran 3:40.71 in London on May 15th. With Nate Brannen still to overcome recent injury, he may be the favorite to the Canada’s national champion this year
Milne, a five-year member of Guelph’s Speed River Track and Field Club, represented Canada at the Beijing Olympics in the 1,500 metres, after he had won the 2008 Harry Jerome Classic in 3:36.00
Milne hails from Callander, just outside North Bay, where he ran track and cross country in high school. After finishing second at OFSAA in Grade 11, it dawned on him that running could take him places.
“I figured if I could get a scholarship, that would be perfect,” he said.
But interest from U.S. schools was limited, particularly when he was banned from running track in Grade 12 because of issues surrounding his reasons for transferring to a different high school.
Eventually he accepted a scholarship from tiny (student population 2,500) High Point University in North Carolina.
“My running really took off there,” Milne said. “I basically outgrew my teammates. There was a lot of training by myself.”
After five years at High Point, Milne wasn’t sure where his running was headed. But some conversations with members of the Speed River club told him this might be the place to be if he wanted to take things to the next level.
“I talked to my parents. They gave me the summer to make up my mind. It was either time to get serious about my running or get a job,” Milne said.
“I always thought I had a little more in me than I had showed in university. When I got to Guelph I definitely thought I could do more.”
In a comfortable city, with great running areas, surrounded by world-class runners and with a world-class coach like Dave Scott-Thomas, Milne blossomed.
