Strathcona Lions Athletic Club entered the British Columbia track and field scene on March 12th at the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Indoor Track Classic at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
Initial members of the club were recruited from Killarney Secondary School in East Vancouver. Bob Solmes and Kim Young, already coaches at the school were joined by Besnik and Tatjana Mece in the first workouts.
The goal of the club is to provide opportunities to school athletes from the inner city to pursue their passion during the summer months and gain opportunities to represent British Columbia at national championships and selection competitions to international events.
Financial support from the Vancouver Chinatown Lions was critical in forming this new club which reach out to elementary and secondary schools in the inner city offering training sessions as part of the Jerome Outreach program.
One young athlete that may well flourish in this new club is Tanya Humeniuk who will turn 16 this year. Last season she should great promise with times of 1500m- 4:38.34, 2000m- 6:19.07, 3000m- 9:53.31 and 2000m Steeple in 7:26.72. This year she has sparkled on the roads with 5k in 17:41.00 and 8k in 29:50.55 plus a surprise indoor 800m in 2:16.33. She may be a strong candidate for the Canadian Team for the World Youth Championships.
